Stavanger Golf Club - Norway

Stavangar Golf Club in Norway selected Sportcrete for bunker lining due to the durability and longevity of the product which will be tested in the harsh environment of coastal southern Norway.

Southern Golf Club, Melbourne, Australia

On Tuesday, 18th March 2008, The Southern Golf Club in Melbourne was the location for the first Sportcrete Bunker Liner System to be installed in Australia.

It is perhaps a little ironic that although Sportcrete was developed in Melbourne and has been used for the last 15yrs as a sports base for tennis, lawn bowls, soccer and multi-sport, it is one of the last major golf countries to install the Sportcrete bunker lining system.

With the formal Asia Pacific industry launch of Sportcrete scheduled for the AGCSA Trade Show in Melbourne in July, this first of a series of pre-release demonstration field days was targeted at the technical side of the industry ... golf course architects, course superintendents, landscapers as well as club and industry officials associated with the management of golf courses.

Although a little windy, the warm sunny day provided ideal conditions for the demonstration.

That help from above was appreciated, as the bunker selected for the installation was challenging to say the least ... being a large 250 square meters plus, greenside bunker in a very tight location. A vertical challenge was also included with the bunker design incorporating 3 tall faces of 2-4m high with 80/85 degree face angles.

The 25 invitees who attended watched with very keen interest as Sportcrete founder Paul Leslie applied the Sportcrete bunker lining system.

Within 20 minutes, there was plenty of poking and prodding of the Sportcrete layer with pens and sticks etc, with balls being thrown at the freshly cured lining soon after.

There was considerable interest in the capability of the product to reduce the incidence of balls plugging in the face of bunkers.

On the suggestion of Steve Hewitt - Superintendent of 13th Beach Golf Club, Barwon Heads Vic - an additional layer of bunker sand was bonded to the top 1m of one of the steep faces to give a sand finish to an area where to bunker sand would otherwise not sit/stay.

Other quality feedback was also forthcoming from the attendees and has given Paul and the team plenty of food for thought.

Following consistent inquiries in recent months as to the suitability of Sportcrete as a cartpath / pathway system, a field trial has also been commenced at the club.

The trial consists of 8 areas , 4–granitic sand & 4 Bluestone 5mm washed crushed dust, 2 of each was mixed with 3% cement dust blend and 2 of each was compacted prior to spraying with Sportcrete bonding Polymer.

These areas will the monitored fortnightly with photos & detailed report to be listed on this site.

We thank The Southern Golf Club for their support in hosting the event and all those who took the time to attend.

Dates and venues for field days proposed for Sydney and Brisbane will be posted as soon as we have them confirmed.

River Oaks Country Club - Houston, Texas, USA

Located in the prestigious River Oaks area of Houston, River Oaks C. C. is one of only two golf courses in the state of Texas designed by famed golf course architect Donald Ross. Sportcrete Texas installed the Sportcrete system into a 900 sq. foot bunker on their driving range. This bunker is heavily used by members for both greenside and fairway shots.

Evacuation and stone installation was managed by Morris Johnson, GCSAA Superintendent at River Oaks. Stone was compacted further by Thomas Shaw, certified Sportcrete installer and project manger for Sportcrete Texas. Notice the nicely cut edge of the bunker down to the Sportcrete base allowing for ample sand to be installed over the base and leaving enough lip in the bunker.

Three hours after the Sportcrete system was installed, sand was carefully placed back into the bunker by the maintenance staff at River Oaks. The finished product is a beautiful playable bunker with an enhanced drainage system and minimal labor required to maintain on a daily basis.

Tanglewood Resort - Pottsboro, Texas, USA

Tanglewood superintendent staff prepared the bunkers by scraping out previously contaminated sand and replacing the existing drainage. Notice the edge detail that will allow between 4 and 5 inches of sand over the Sportcrete protecting the integrity of the Sportcrete underlayment while using mechanical rakes during daily bunker maintenance.

Sportcrete personnel installed 2 inches of aggregate throughout the bunker in preparation for the Sportcrete spraying to create the engineered porous base below the sand layer in the bunker. Stakes were used throughout the bunker to aid the correct stone depths. The commonly found aggregate material was compacted using a vibrating plate compacter.

The certified Sportcrete installer is shown spraying the aggregate in pre-measured quantities using Mono Pumps especially fabricated to spray Sportcrete. Sportcrete is installed in 2 passes to ensure the aggregate will set up to approximately 2500 PSI, yet still remain porous. Stone will be ready for installation of sand within 3 hours and will completely cure within 24 hours.

Angel Fire Resort - Angel Fire, New Mexico, USA

As part of the golf course renovation project at Angel Fire Golf Course, Sportcrete Texas was engaged to supply and install the Sportcrete Engineered Bunker System. The course has 38 bunkers, totaling 38,000 square feet (3,800m2), all of which were renovated within the contract.

Colonial Country Club - Fort Worth, Texas, USA

At Colonial we recently completed a trial installation of the Sportcrete system in a greenside bunker on hole number 6. under the guidance of greens superintendent Scott Ebers. The top row of photos shows the cleaning out of the existing bunker material, inspection of the herringbone drainage system and installation of the stone material in preparation for the spraying of Sportcrete. The middle and bottom photos display the equipment setup, spraying of the stone material with Sportcrete, and the finished engineered base with the sand installed. Colonial continues to evaluate the system.

Madrid, Spain

Sportcrete, together with Only-Golf, planning and design constructed a fully synthetic executive nine hole golf course in the centre of Madrid, Spain.

Using the Sportcrete engineered base system a contoured golf course was sculptured using rock. The Sportcrete system stabilized the rock to form a permanent base which was covered with Fieldturf synthetic turf.

The golf course was developed by Canal Isabel Segundo in association with Madrid City Authority. The facility has been constructed on top of one of the oldest reservoirs in Madrid.

The use of Sportcrete was integral to the project. It was essential that the system was entirely porous to allow all captured water to migrate into the reservoir below and be used in the city water supply.

Benavista Bowling Green - Marbella, Spain

Sportcrete constructed a new Bowling green on behalf of Benavista Bowling Club, Marbella, Spain. Sportcrete was selected due to the superior base construction utilizing the Sportcrete system. A free draining, solid base with a planarity of 2mm over 3metres was constructed and overlaid with a synthetic, all-weather surface.

Hughie Holgate, owner of the facility expressed his delight with the facility this way, "An excellent surface has been provided, the Sportcrete team completed all works exactly as promised. The drainage on the green is excellent, we are able to play within minutes of the even the heaviest rains"

Clark H.S and Arbor View H.S. - Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Sportcrete was commissioned by FieldTurf - the worlds leading synthetic turf builder - to work with them in constructing two fields in Las Vegas on behalf of the school district at Clark High School and Arbor View High School.

In using Sportcrete, Fieldturf was able to reduce the depth of rock, from their nominal 150mm to 100mm, in the base construction. Calculations showed the strength and integrity of the Sportcrete base to be stronger than the corresponding base excluding Sportcrete. Additionally, the base had the drainage capacity necessary for a high-quality FieldTurf installation.

When tested by FieldTurf for GMax, the Sportcrete base provided excellent results.  Download the Fieldturf GMax Summary Report and FieldTurf GMax Detailed Report.
